DEFINITION
Infectious diseases are caused by infective agents known as pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, protozoans, prions, fungi, and macroscopic parasitic animals. They are contagious meaning they can be spread from one organism to another via direct contact or a vector (one that does not cause disease itself but that transmits infection by carrying pathogens).
